A French/German naturalized immigrant father and a Taiwanese naturalized immigrant mother who was raised in Japan gave birth to Schauffele on October 25, 1993, in San Diego, California. Throughout his golf career, his father has been his only swing instructor.

Because of his emphasis on fundamental golf club mechanics and ball flight principles, Schauffele did not observe his own swing until he was roughly 18 years old.

At the top level of European soccer, two of Schauffele’s great-grandfathers were active players. While playing for the Austrian national football team, Johann Hoffmann won numerous national championships for the French (FC Sochaux; Racing Strasbourg), Bohemian (DSV Saaz), and Austrian (SK Rapid Wien) football teams.
