The Crown's creator breaks silence after major fan backlash over leaked season six scene

THE CROWN received backlash from fans after it was revealed that Princess Diana was set to appear as a ghost in season six.

Viewers were disturbed to hear that actress Elizabeth Debicki would make a reappearance after Diana's death, branding the planned scenes 'tasteless'.

Now the show's creator Peter Morgan has shared why he wanted to include this segment in the royal series.

He explained she was not intended to be seen as a ghost but a figure in the imagination of Prince Charles and the Queen.

Peter told Variety magazine: "I never imagined it as Diana’s 'ghost' in the traditional sense.

"It was her continuing to live vividly in the minds of those she has left behind.

"Diana was unique, and I suppose that’s what inspired me to find a unique way of representing her. She deserved special treatment narratively."

Fans of The Crown have previously spoken out about the portrayal of Diana's death on the show.

Simone Simmonds, a friend of Diana’s, called it 'sick' and 'ghoulish' that Netflix bosses had allowed distressing scenes of her death to streamed.

In the show medics were shown trying to save her in a blood-drenched theatre after her horrible accident.

Elizabeth Debicki was also made to lie in a coffin so viewers could see the princess dead in the open casket.
