Woman Mistakes Sleeping Cat for Dead in Freaky Viral Video

A TikTok user has captured the moment she mistakenly thought her cat was dead while he was in a deep sleep. The clip has gained over 17 million views in less than a day since it was posted.

@Jollymaii, real name Jolly Hoang, shared the clip online after she had filmed it to show her boyfriend how cute her cat is.

"I woke up and thought my cat was in a deep sleep so I recorded myself pranking him and I realized he isn't waking up at all," reads the text-to-voice feature on the video.

Hoang can be seen visibly going through all the motions in the viral video, from excitement to confusion to shock and finally relief.

The TikToker begins by scooping up her cat as he sleeps, only for the cat to surprisingly barely move while his head flops backward, seemingly lifeless.

"I started to get really scared," continues the text-to-voice as Hoang looks closely at the cat before moving him in an attempt to wake him up.

"Wake up," she says as another cat enters the frame to inspect what's happening. At the final moments of the TikTok, the cat begins to slightly move by himself, to the relief of Hoang, who then pecks his head.

In a later update video, Hoang clarified to concerned viewers that the cat is alive, after the lack of obvious movements at the end confused them. "Yes, it is alive, and the reason I posted the video is because I thought it was cute and it's funny because he pulled a prank on me," she explained.

According to research, cats sleep an average of 15 hours per day but only around 25% of that sleep is actually deep sleep. The other 75% sees the cat lightly sleep, what is otherwise known as a "cat nap."

When cats do go into a deep sleep, their whole body relaxes and stretches out. Like humans, their brain waves become smaller and closer together when this happens. As Hoang found out, albeit the hard way, cats are extremely hard to wake during a deep sleep, but it normally only lasts around five minutes before it returns to a light sleep again.

However, some viewers of the clip have suggested that the cat may have been revived by Hoang after passing out or having a neurological episode. "My heart couldn't stop racing," commented one TikTok user.

"Sorry for shaking you like a salt and pepper bottle," says Hoang to the cat in the latest clip.
