Granite City police officer shot; suspect still at large

GRANITE CITY, Ill. – A Granite City police officer was shot in the line of duty while responding to a call.

Granite City Police Major Gary Brooks told FOX 2 that the officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries, but the suspect is still on the loose and authorities believe he is armed. The Illinois State Police are taking the lead in the investigation. They said that the shooting happened in the alleyway at 25th and Delmar. There is police crime scene tape up in multiple areas around the scene.

This all unfolded a little after 10:00 p.m. Investigators with the Illinois State Police said that two Granite City police officers responded to a home on the 2400 block of Delmar for a call about a suspicious person. ISP investigators revealed that shortly after the officers made contact with the male subject, he fired multiple shots at the officers, striking one of them in the arm.

Major Brooks explained that officers fired back and the suspect took off from the scene and is still on the run. It’s unclear whether the suspect was hit. The officer has since been released.

Authorities are still trying to figure out why the suspect fired at the officers in the first place. At this point, police have not released any kind of details about the suspect.
