Dog Sitter Caught on Video Allegedly Punching a Puppy Arrested: Police
Police in Arizona have arrested a dog sitter over a video in which he was allegedly caught abusing a dog.
The Chandler Police Department arrested 36-year-old John Wyman after a dog owner identified the sitter as the man in the video seen kicking and punching a dog.
Wyman was arrested, cited and processed for one count of animal cruelty inflicting injury, which is classed as a misdemeanor.
Police received a report on April 18 from a concerned local individual who had seen the video on social media, posted online by the dog's owner. The video reportedly featured a male dog sitter kicking and punching a dog.
After speaking to the reporting individual, police were able to track down the owner of the dog in order to investigate further.
"The officer took the reporting party's information and used police databases to identify the dog owner. After locating the dog owner, the officer interviewed the victim and confirmed they were willing to aid in prosecution," explained Chandler Police Department.
The dog owner provided the police with information that allowed them to identify the suspect and ultimately lead to his arrest.
According to police, Wyman cooperated and met with officers at the Chandler Police Downtown precinct.
Research by Grand View Research suggests that the global pet sitting industry was valued at $2.6 billion in 2019 and was expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 8.7% from 2020 to 2027.
With a rising demand for pet sitting however, this also requires a level of trust for both pet owners and sitters themselves.
Just last month, a dog walker in the U.K. was arrested and jailed for 18 weeks after leaving two of her client's dogs in a car, killing the animals.
The dog walker left two spaniels that she was paid to walk in the trunk of her car on July 21 last year, just days after the British Met Office issued an extreme heat weather warning.
Owners became concerned when the dog walker did not return from the planned "quick walk" by the evening. When they called the walker, she informed them that she was panicking as she struggled to wake up the dogs.
While in Texas, a 22-year-old dog sitter was reportedly left "permanently and catastrophically" disfigured following an alleged attack involving a group of dogs she was hired to look after.
Lawyers of the sitter filed a lawsuit against a couple who owned the dogs, claiming the sitter was immediately attacked by a Pitbull and German Shepherd upon opening the front door.
