Angela Goethals is born on May 20, 1977, in New York City, New York. 

She was raised by her single mother, Rosalind Goethals, who was a teacher. She grew up with her sister, Sara Goethals.

Her father, Michael Goethals, separated from Rosalind when Angela was young. Because of that, Michael was mostly absent from her childhood.

She is also the great-great-granddaughter of the chief engineer of the Panama Canal, and namesake of New York's Goethals Bridge, George Washington Goethals.

Goethals attended Stuyvesant High School, where she was a cheerleader. She completed her undergraduate degree in French from Vassar University, a private liberal college in 1999.

She developed her passion for acting after a family friend and actress Jeanie Hackett took her to several auditions.
