SUPERMARKET Aldi is stocking Haughton Hams' range of Nitrite Free Bacon, in a bid for better "food safety".

The healthier bacon option is free of cancer-causing Nitrite, preservatives and allergens - all of which are normally used to give bacon its classic flavour, colour and texture.

Selling for just £2.29 for a 180g pack, the product has been developed using fruits and spice extracts, meaning fry up fans can enjoy their full English guilt free.

This is not the first time Britain's bacon has been saved however.

Naked Bacon, produced by Northern Ireland food firm Finnebrogue, has been available at UK supermarkets since the new year.

Rashers costs twice as much as the usual supermarket brand at around £3 per packet in Sainsbury's.

The World Health Organisation has ruled adding nitrites increases bowel cancer risk.

Thanks to a technological breakthrough, the new nitrate free bacon does not use potentially-harmful nitrites in the curing process.

In 2015 the World Health Organisation warned there were significant increases in the risk of bowel cancer from eating processed meats such as bacon that traditionally have nitrites added as they are cured.

UK sales plunged 11 per cent the following year as worried shoppers bought 25.4 million fewer packs of bacon.

Aldi's bacon will be available as a part of Super Six meat deals.

The Nitrite Free Bacon will be in stores from 26th April, while stocks last.
