Lions have been used in British heraldry since the 1100s. Who in Britain at that time would have seen a lion and how?

• Don't underestimate how much people travelled - 1100 is as yesterday in human terms. People have always traded and communicated. The Romans were here for centuries and must have been well aware of what lions were like since they threw them to the gladiators.
